A minor assessment is the service rendered when a nuclear medicine specialist evaluates a patient on a non-emergent basis on the advisability of performing a diagnostic nuclear medicine procedure which eventually is not done.
When to Use
- Bill A632 when a nuclear medicine specialist consults on the appropriateness of a diagnostic nuclear medicine procedure, but the procedure is ultimately not performed.
- Use A632 for a non-emergent assessment by a nuclear medicine specialist regarding a potential nuclear medicine study that is subsequently cancelled or deemed unnecessary.
- A632 is appropriate when a patient is evaluated for a nuclear medicine procedure, but the decision is made not to proceed with the study due to contraindications or alternative management plans.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A632 when the nuclear medicine procedure is actually performed; in such cases, bill the appropriate diagnostic code (e.g., K600-K699 series).
- Submitting A632 when the assessment is for a therapeutic nuclear medicine procedure; this code is strictly for diagnostic procedure advisability.
- Using A632 for a routine follow-up visit or a consultation for a condition unrelated to the advisability of a nuclear medicine procedure.
