Certification of stillbirth is payable to the physician who personally completes the Medical Certificate of Stillbirth. The service may include any counselling of family members that is rendered at the same visit.
When to Use
- Bill A772 when you personally complete the Medical Certificate of Stillbirth for a patient outside of a hospital setting.
- A772 covers the completion of the stillbirth certificate and any immediate family counselling provided during that same encounter.
- This code is appropriate even if the stillbirth occurred prior to your assessment, provided you are the physician completing the official documentation.
Common Pitfalls
- Submitting A772 when the Medical Certificate of Stillbirth was completed by another physician, even if you provided some counselling.
- Attempting to bill separately for counselling provided during the same visit where the Medical Certificate of Stillbirth was completed; this counselling is included in A772.
- Failing to include the correct Health Card Number of the patient experiencing the stillbirth, which will lead to claim rejection.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the physician who personally signs the Medical Certificate of Stillbirth is the one submitting the A772 claim.
- If the stillbirth certification occurs in a hospital, use C772 instead of A772, as C772 is the designated code for hospital settings.
