A947 – Sleep medicine FPA

A focused practice assessment (FPA) rendered by a GP/FP physician with additional training and/or experience in sleep medicine. The assessment must satisfy, at a minimum, all of the requirements of an intermediate assessment.
When to Use
- Bill A947 for a comprehensive sleep assessment by a GP/FP with specialized sleep training, including detailed history of sleep disturbances, review of sleep logs, and physical exam relevant to sleep disorders.
- Use A947 when performing an initial focused assessment for suspected obstructive sleep apnea, requiring more in-depth evaluation than a standard intermediate assessment (A007).
Common Pitfalls
- Billing A947 when the service provided is a routine intermediate assessment (A007) without the specialized sleep medicine component and additional training/experience.
- Submitting A947 if the patient has already received another consultation, assessment, visit, or counselling service from you on the same day, as per same-day restrictions.

- Ensure your documentation clearly supports the 'focused practice' aspect, detailing the sleep-specific history, examination, and diagnostic reasoning beyond a general intermediate assessment.
- Be prepared to provide proof of additional training or experience in sleep medicine if requested by the Ministry.
