Subsequent visit by anaesthetist to patient in hospital or other institution, per day; sixth to thirteenth week inclusive (maximum 3 per patient per week).
When to Use
- Use C017 for routine follow-up assessments of an inpatient by an anaesthetist between the start of the 6th week and the end of the 13th week of their total hospitalization.
- Apply this code when managing long-term pain or complex anaesthesia-related recovery issues that do not qualify as an acute intercurrent illness.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing C017 beyond the 13th week of hospitalization, which will trigger a rejection; transition to C019 once the 14th week begins.
- Failing to account for the patient's original hospital admission date when calculating the 6-week threshold, leading to incorrect use of C012 instead of C017.
- Exceeding the maximum of 3 visits per week, as any additional routine visits are not payable under this code.
Billing Tips
- If the patient develops an acute intercurrent illness requiring additional visits beyond the weekly limit of 3, bill the extra visits using C121 rather than attempting to force them into C017.
