E003CSupportive Care/monitoring by Anaesthesiologist

OHIP Surgical Assists Code — Supportive Care/monitoring · Schedule of Benefits

In addition to the common elements, supportive care or monitoring by the anaesthesiologist includes the following specific elements: A. Being in constant attendance at a surgical procedure for the sole purpose of monitoring the condition of the patient (including appropriate physical examination and inquiry) and being immediately available to provide, and including the provision of, special supportive care to the patient. B. Discussion with, and providing advice and information, including prescribing therapy to the patient or the patient's representative, whether by telephone or otherwise, on matters related to the service and its results. C. Providing premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel for any aspect(s) of the specific elements of the service that is(are) performed at a place other than the place in which the attendance occurs. The fee for this service is calculated in the same manner as for other anaesthesia services.

When to Use

  • Use E003C when providing continuous intraoperative monitoring for a patient undergoing a procedure where the primary surgeon is performing a task requiring anaesthesiologist presence, but no formal anaesthetic block or general anaesthetic is being administered.
  • Use this code for high-risk patients requiring dedicated anaesthesiologist oversight during procedures performed under local anaesthesia or sedation administered by the surgeon.

Common Pitfalls

  • Attempting to bill E003C in conjunction with standard anaesthesia time units or other anaesthesia procedure codes, which will result in automatic rejection.
  • Billing E003C when the service is actually a standard anaesthetic procedure covered by the main anaesthesia fee schedule, as this code is strictly for supportive care/monitoring only.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure you append the appropriate after-hours premium (E400C or E401C) or special visit premium (C998C, C985C, or C999C) if the case timing meets the criteria, as these are the only valid add-ons for this service.
