E030 – Procedural sedation

Procedural sedation rendered by an anaesthesiologist in support of services performed by another physician listed in the Nerve Blocks for Acute Pain Management, Interventional Pain Injections, or the Peripheral/Other Nerve Block sections of the Schedule.
When to Use
- Use E030C when providing moderate sedation for patients undergoing interventional pain injections like G246, G117, G119, or G918 where the patient remains responsive to verbal commands.
- Select E030C specifically when the sedation level is limited to moderate sedation, as opposed to E031C which is reserved for deep sedation or general anaesthesia.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E030C alongside Z432C will result in an automatic rejection, as Z432C is explicitly prohibited for anaesthesia services supporting nerve blocks.
- Attempting to claim GP97 extra units for patient factors like BMI or ASA status is disallowed when E030C is billed, as E030C replaces all basic units for the procedure.
- Submitting E030C when the physician performing the nerve block is the same physician administering the sedation will trigger a rejection due to the same-day restriction.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the procedural note explicitly confirms the patient maintained a patent airway and spontaneous ventilation to support the definition of moderate sedation required for E030C.
- Always append the suffix C to E030 to ensure the claim is processed correctly under the anaesthesia fee schedule.
