When to Use
- Use E117 for relaxing incisions performed to correct post-keratoplasty astigmatism when the primary corneal transplant (E121) has already healed.
- Use E117 for surgical management of non-cosmetic corneal scarring resulting from trauma where a keratectomy is required to improve visual axis clarity.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill E117 on the same day as E121 (penetrating keratoplasty) or E124 (limbal stem cell transplant) as these are explicitly restricted.
- Avoid billing E117 for cosmetic procedures; the claim must clearly document the functional or visual necessity to avoid audit rejection.
- Failure to document the Injury Severity Score (ISS) in the medical record will lead to the rejection of the E420 trauma premium if claimed.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the surgical assistant (E117B) and anaesthesiologist (E117C) services are billed using the 6 base units provided in the schedule.
- If the procedure is performed after hours or on weekends, apply the E409 or E410 premium to the base fee, but note that these cannot be combined with the E420 trauma premium.
