E230
E230 – Medial canthoplasty (skin and muscle)
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Medial canthoplasty (skin and muscle)
When to Use
- Use E230 for the surgical correction of medial ectropion or laxity involving both skin and muscle layers, distinct from simple skin-only procedures.
- Select E230 when performing a medial canthoplasty to tighten the medial canthal tendon, as opposed to a lateral canthoplasty which would fall under different surgical codes.
- Apply this code when the procedure is performed as a standalone surgical intervention for medial eyelid malposition.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill E230 in conjunction with E231 (Medial canthoplasty, skin, muscle and tarsus) as the latter is a more comprehensive procedure that includes the tarsal component.
- Avoid billing E230 alongside general eyelid lesion excision codes if the canthoplasty is the primary surgical intent, as this may trigger a claim for unbundling.
- Ensure the procedure is not billed as a minor office procedure if the clinical documentation does not support the surgical reconstruction of the canthal anatomy.
Billing Tips
- If the procedure is performed bilaterally, ensure the appropriate diagnostic code is linked and the service is billed with the 'BIL' modifier to receive the correct fee adjustment.
- Always verify if the procedure is performed in an operating room setting, as the fee for E230 is strictly for the professional service and does not include facility or anesthesia components.
