E231Medial canthal tendon repair

OHIP Surgical Assists Code — OCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Medial canthal tendon repair - tendon repair only

When to Use

  • Use E231 when performing an isolated repair of a disrupted medial canthal tendon following trauma or dehiscence.
  • Use E231 as the primary procedure when the surgical focus is strictly the tendon repair, distinct from eyelid reconstruction or blepharoplasty.

Common Pitfalls

  • Claiming E231 alongside E140 or E141 will result in an automatic rejection due to same-day billing restrictions.
  • Attempting to bill E231 for cosmetic blepharoplasty without Ministry of Health prior approval will lead to audit recovery, as E231 is not a substitute for cosmetic eyelid procedures.

Billing Tips

  • If performing a secondary procedure in the same operative field, ensure you append E233 to capture the additional value rather than attempting to bill E231 twice.
