E300
E300 – Resection of pinna - with primary closure
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — AURAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This is a surgical procedure for the resection of the pinna (the external part of the ear) followed by primary closure of the wound. This service is eligible for surgeon (suffix A) and anaesthetist (suffix C) services. The anaesthesia component includes 6 base units plus time units.
When to Use
- Use E300 for the formal surgical resection of a lesion or portion of the pinna where the resulting defect is closed primarily with sutures.
- Select E300 when the procedure is limited to the pinna; do not use for procedures involving the external auditory canal, which fall under different surgical categories.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E300 alongside a consultation or assessment code on the same day is generally disallowed unless the assessment is for a separate, unrelated clinical issue.
- Attempting to bill E300 for simple skin biopsies or minor excisions that do not meet the criteria for a formal resection of the pinna structure.
Billing Tips
- If performing a resection for malignancy requiring frozen section confirmation in a hospital setting, ensure you append E977 to capture the 25% premium.
- Always verify if the procedure qualifies for the E420 trauma premium if performed within 24 hours of an injury, as this significantly increases the total procedural value.
