E317 – Incision and drainage of extensive haematoma of pinna with packing of ear and external compression dressing - general anaesthetic
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — AURAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This surgical procedure involves the incision and drainage of an extensive haematoma of the pinna (outer ear). The service requires the administration of a general anaesthetic. The procedure also includes packing the ear and applying an external compression dressing following the drainage. As a #-prefixed service, when performed in a hospital or Integrated Community Health Services Centre (ICHSC), the costs for premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel are covered by the facility's budget and cannot be billed to the patient (see ).
When to Use
- Use E317 for the surgical drainage of a significant auricular haematoma requiring general anaesthesia, specifically when the procedure includes the mandatory packing and compression dressing.
- Do not use E317 for minor haematomas managed in the office under local anaesthetic; those should be billed using minor procedure codes such as Z310.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E317 in a non-hospital or non-ICHSC setting is a violation of the #-prefix rule, as the facility must provide the equipment and supplies.
- Attempting to bill an office visit or consultation code on the same day as E317 will result in a rejection unless the visit is for a completely unrelated condition and is appropriately appended with the 'M' diagnostic code.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative note explicitly documents the use of general anaesthesia and the application of a compression dressing to support the E317 claim during potential audits.
- If the patient meets the criteria for trauma (ISS score requirements), ensure the ISS is documented in the chart to support the addition of the E420 trauma premium.
