Payable as an add-on to F006 (closed reduction of intra-articular fracture) for each additional intra-articular fracture of the hand or wrist reduced by closed method. This code is used for the second and any subsequent fractures treated in the same operative session.
When to Use
- Use for the second and any subsequent intra-articular fractures of the hand or wrist reduced by closed method during the same operative session as the primary F006.
- Apply this code when managing multiple distinct intra-articular fractures in the same hand or wrist that require individual reduction maneuvers beyond the initial F006.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E503 without a primary F006 on the same claim will result in automatic rejection.
- Attempting to use E503 for extra-articular fractures or fractures outside the hand/wrist anatomy is an incorrect application of the code and risks audit recovery.
