E547
E547 – Methyl methacrylate fixation (not arthroplasty)
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
An add-on fee payable for the use of methyl methacrylate for fixation purposes. This fee is explicitly not payable when used as part of an arthroplasty procedure. This is listed under the FIXATION subheading on page of the Schedule.
When to Use
- Use E547 when applying methyl methacrylate for the fixation of pathological fractures where no arthroplasty is performed.
- Use E547 for the stabilization of bone segments in non-arthroplasty orthopedic procedures, such as the filling of bone cysts or defects requiring structural cement support.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E547 alongside any arthroplasty procedure code is a direct violation of the Schedule and will lead to automatic claim rejection or audit recovery.
- Attempting to bill E547 for bone graft substitutes that are not methyl methacrylate will result in an incorrect claim, as the code is specific to the chemical composition of the fixation material.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly states the use of methyl methacrylate for fixation to justify the add-on fee during a potential audit.
