E596 – Osteotomy - each additional

This code represents the surgical fee for an additional osteotomy of a metatarsal and/or phalanx. It is only payable for each additional procedure performed in conjunction with the primary procedure, R276 (osteotomy, metatarsals and phalanx). This code can only be claimed by the surgeon (suffix A) and does not add separate basic units for surgical assistant or anaesthesia services.
When to Use
- Use E596 for each additional metatarsal or phalangeal osteotomy performed beyond the first, which is covered by the primary code R276.
- Claim E596 when performing a multi-level correction or multiple toe osteotomies during the same operative session as the primary R276 procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E596 as a standalone procedure; it is strictly an add-on code and will be rejected if submitted without R276 on the same claim.
- Attempting to add surgical assistant or anaesthesia units to E596, which is prohibited as these services are bundled into the primary R276 fee.
