E706
E706 – Gastrectomy with choledochotomy
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
When to Use
- Use E706 when a choledochotomy is performed to explore or drain the common bile duct during the same operative session as a partial (S123, S125) or total (S128) gastrectomy.
- Apply this code specifically when the biliary intervention is medically necessary due to suspected choledocholithiasis or biliary obstruction identified during the primary gastric procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E706 without an associated primary gastrectomy code (S123, S125, or S128) will result in an automatic rejection.
- Attempting to bill E706 alongside a cholecystectomy (S242) for the same biliary pathology may trigger a claim rejection for unbundling if the Ministry deems the exploration part of the primary procedure.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly details the indication for the choledochotomy, as this is the primary documentation required to justify the additional fee on top of the gastrectomy.
