E724Paracentesis - administration of chemotherapy or sclerosing agent

OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This is an add-on fee payable in addition to a paracentesis procedure. It specifically covers the service of administering chemotherapy or a sclerosing agent. It must be billed in conjunction with the primary paracentesis procedure, such as Z590 or Z591.

When to Use

  • Use E724 when performing a therapeutic paracentesis (Z590 or Z591) that includes the instillation of a sclerosing agent for malignant ascites management.
  • Use E724 when administering chemotherapy agents directly into the peritoneal cavity during a paracentesis procedure.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing E724 as a standalone code without an accompanying primary procedure code like Z590 or Z591 will result in an automatic rejection.
  • Attempting to bill E724 for routine diagnostic or therapeutic paracentesis that does not involve the active administration of a sclerosing or chemotherapy agent is an audit risk.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the medical record clearly documents the specific agent used, as this is the primary justification for the add-on fee.
  • E724 is eligible for age premiums and after-hours premiums (E409/E410) when the primary procedure qualifies, as it is considered part of the surgical procedure fee.
