This is an add-on fee payable to the surgeon for performing an intra-operative cholangiogram during a cholecystectomy (S287).
When to Use
- Use E794 when an intra-operative cholangiogram is performed during an open or laparoscopic cholecystectomy (S287) to evaluate the biliary tree.
- Apply this code specifically when the procedure is documented as a formal radiological study of the bile ducts during the cholecystectomy.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill E794 if the cholangiogram was attempted but failed or was not completed, as the fee requires the successful performance of the procedure.
- Avoid billing E794 with any procedure other than S287, as it is strictly restricted as an add-on to the cholecystectomy base code.
- Do not bill E794 for routine intra-operative imaging that does not meet the criteria of a formal cholangiogram.
