E807 – Multivisceral transplant - recipient, with evisceration
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Payable in addition to `S197` (Multivisceral transplant - recipient, without evisceration), this service covers the work involved with performing an evisceration as part of the recipient's transplant surgery. The multivisceral transplant must include the small bowel and liver, and may or may not include the duodenum, stomach, pancreas, and large bowel.
When to Use
- Use E807 exclusively as an add-on to S197 when the multivisceral transplant procedure specifically requires the surgical removal (evisceration) of the recipient's native abdominal organs.
- Apply this code when the transplant scope includes the liver and small bowel, and the surgical plan necessitates the removal of the native stomach, duodenum, or pancreas alongside the bowel.
Common Pitfalls
- Submitting E807 as a standalone claim will result in immediate rejection; it must be billed on the same claim as S197.
- Billing E807 for transplants that do not involve the liver and small bowel combination, as the code is strictly defined for multivisceral procedures involving these specific organs.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly details the evisceration component, as this is the primary justification for the additional fee over the base S197 procedure.
- Apply applicable age-based premiums (e.g., for pediatric recipients) to the total fee, as E807 is considered a surgical procedure code eligible for these enhancements.
