E828 – Rigid internal fixation
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is for rigid internal fixation, using any method, and is billed as an add-on to F139 (open reduction of mandible fracture). Rigid internal fixation may include the use of a miniplate(s), or other internal fixation device(s).
When to Use
- Use E828 as an add-on to F139 when you perform an open reduction of a mandible fracture and secure the site using miniplates or screws.
- Apply this code when the clinical documentation confirms rigid internal fixation was necessary to stabilize the fracture site beyond standard intermaxillary fixation.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E828 for multiple plates on a single fracture line is incorrect, as the code is limited to one service per major fracture line.
- Submitting E828 without a corresponding F139 claim will result in an automatic rejection, as it is strictly an add-on procedure.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your operative report explicitly details the use of miniplates or internal fixation devices for each fracture line to justify the E828 units claimed.
