E830 – Mini-plate fixation
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
When to Use
- Use E830 as an add-on when performing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of orbital fractures using F142.
- Use E830 for each distinct major fracture line treated with mini-plate fixation during midface fracture repairs, such as those involving F143 or F144.
- Apply E830 when securing specific anatomical sites like the infraorbital rim, malar-zygomatic complex, or naso-frontal junction during complex facial trauma reconstruction.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E830 as a single unit when multiple distinct major fracture lines were plated; you must claim one unit per major fracture line per side.
- Failing to link E830 to a primary fracture reduction code, which will lead to automatic rejection as it is strictly an add-on procedure.
- Misinterpreting the 'per major fracture line' rule by billing for individual screws or plates rather than the anatomical fracture line itself.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your operative report explicitly identifies each major fracture line (e.g., LeFort I, II, or III) to justify the number of E830 units claimed.
- When treating bilateral fractures, ensure you clearly document the plate fixation for each side to support the multiple units of E830 submitted.
