This service is for each additional biopsy performed using Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS). It is an add-on code to G050 (Endobronchial ultrasound for guided biopsy of hilar and/or mediastinal lymph nodes) and can be billed up to a maximum of three times per session. The '#' prefix indicates that for services performed in a hospital, the premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel are funded by the hospital's global budget. If provided in an Integrated Community Health Services Centre (ICHSC), these costs are funded by the ICHSC. Patients cannot be charged for these components. See for details.
When to Use
- Use E837 when you perform additional needle passes on distinct lymph node stations beyond the initial biopsy covered by G050.
- Use E837 when multiple biopsies are required on the same lymph node station to ensure adequate tissue sampling for diagnostic pathology.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E837 more than three times per session will result in automatic rejection, as the code is capped at a maximum of three units.
- Attempting to bill E837 as a standalone service without an accompanying G050 claim will lead to a rejection, as it is strictly an add-on code.
- Failing to clearly document the number of distinct passes or sites in the procedure note creates audit risk, as the claim must justify the count of E837 units billed.
Billing Tips
- Ensure your claim includes the G050 base procedure code on the same submission to avoid the add-on rejection.
- When billing multiple units of E837, ensure the total quantity (up to 3) is correctly entered in the 'units' field of your billing software to capture the full $50.75 per additional biopsy.
