E979
E979 – Clinoidal drilling for complex aneurysms
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — NEUROLOGICAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
When to Use
- Use E979 when performing anterior clinoidectomy to expose the proximal neck of an ophthalmic or paraclinoid aneurysm during a craniotomy.
- Apply this code when the drilling of the clinoid process is required to achieve adequate proximal control for complex aneurysms billed under N105.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E979 as a standalone procedure without an associated N105 or N154 claim will result in an automatic rejection.
- Attempting to bill E979 for routine skull base exposure or standard craniotomy drilling that does not involve the clinoid process for aneurysm access is considered an audit risk.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly details the clinoidal drilling steps to justify the add-on fee in the event of a post-payment review.
