E981 – Tympanotomy with removal of middle ear tumour
OHIP Surgical Assists Code — Y. Ocular and Aural Surgical Procedures · Schedule of Benefits
This is an add-on fee code for the removal of a middle ear tumour. It is billed in addition to E328 Tympanotomy.
When to Use
- Use E981 exclusively as an add-on to E328 when the primary objective of the tympanotomy is the surgical excision of a middle ear tumour.
- Apply this code when performing a middle ear exploration that results in the identified removal of a benign or malignant neoplasm within the middle ear space.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing E981 as a standalone procedure; it is an add-on code and will be rejected if not submitted on the same claim as E328.
- Misusing E981 for routine middle ear procedures like myringotomy or ventilation tube insertion, which do not involve tumour resection.
- Failing to document the specific nature and pathology of the middle ear tumour, which is required to justify the additional fee over the base E328.
Billing Tips
- Ensure both E328 and E981 are submitted on the same claim to prevent automatic rejection of the add-on component.
- If the procedure is performed after hours, apply the relevant after-hours premium (E409 or E410) to the total procedural value including E981.
