F007 – Open reduction of phalanx fracture

Open reduction for a fracture of a phalanx. This procedure is eligible for assistant and anaesthesia services, with base units of 6 and 7 respectively, as indicated in the Schedule of Benefits on page .
When to Use
- Use F007 for the open reduction of a phalanx fracture requiring surgical incision to achieve anatomical alignment.
- Use F007 when internal fixation (such as K-wires or screws) is required to stabilize the phalanx fracture, distinguishing it from closed reduction procedures like F004.
- Use F007 for complex phalanx fractures where percutaneous pinning is insufficient and an open approach is necessary to address soft tissue interposition or articular surface restoration.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing F007 for a closed reduction; closed reduction of a phalanx fracture should be billed under F004, not F007.
- Attempting to bill F007 in conjunction with E584 or E558 for the same fracture site, as these are often considered inclusive or mutually exclusive depending on the surgical approach.
- Failing to document the 'open' nature of the procedure, which is a prerequisite for F007; if the procedure is performed percutaneously without a formal open incision, the claim is subject to audit recovery.
