F016 – Closed reduction, one or more
OHIP Anaesthesia Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This procedure involves the non-surgical manipulation and realignment (closed reduction) of fractures involving one or more carpal bones in the wrist. This fee code applies whether one or multiple carpal bones are reduced. It is eligible for anaesthesia with 6 base units. An assistant's service is not eligible for payment unless specific criteria are met and submitted for independent consideration.
When to Use
- Use F016 for the non-surgical manipulation and realignment of one or more carpal bone fractures, regardless of the number of bones involved.
- Select F016 when the procedure is performed closed; if the fracture requires an open surgical approach, you must use the appropriate open reduction code rather than F016.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill F016 in conjunction with F017 (Closed reduction of metacarpal) for the same wrist, as this is considered unbundling; ensure the anatomical site is distinct if billing multiple procedures.
- Avoid billing an assistant fee with F016, as it is not eligible for payment unless you have received prior approval for exceptional circumstances.
Billing Tips
- Always append E584 if the plaster cast application occurs in an office or clinic setting outside of the hospital to capture the additional fee.
- Ensure the procedure start time is accurately recorded to determine eligibility for after-hours premiums E409 or E410, which significantly increase the base fee.
