F018 – Scaphoid - no reduction, rigid immobilization
OHIP Anaesthesia Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is for the non-operative treatment of a scaphoid (carpal navicular) bone fracture. It involves the application of rigid immobilization, such as a cast, to stabilize the fracture without performing a surgical reduction. If a plaster cast is applied in a setting outside of a hospital, E584 can be claimed in addition.
When to Use
- Use F018 for non-displaced scaphoid fractures requiring immobilization in a thumb spica cast where no manipulation or reduction is performed.
- Select this code when managing a suspected scaphoid fracture with rigid immobilization in the office or clinic setting, distinguishing it from F019 which involves reduction.
Common Pitfalls
- Claiming F018 alongside a minor assessment code (A007) is often rejected; ensure the assessment is bundled or that the clinical scenario justifies a separate visit if performed on a different date.
- Billing F018 for simple wrist sprains or soft tissue injuries is an audit risk, as the code specifically requires a confirmed or clinically suspected scaphoid fracture.
Billing Tips
- Always append E584 when applying a plaster cast in a non-hospital office setting to capture the additional supply and labor costs associated with the immobilization.
