F093
F093 – ORIF distal femur fracture with intra-articular extension
OHIP Anaesthesia Code · Schedule of Benefits
Diaphyseal or metaphyseal distal femur fracture with intra-articular extension – with or without intramedullary fixation
When to Use
- Use F093 for distal femur fractures involving the articular surface that require open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or intramedullary nailing.
- Select F093 when the fracture extends into the knee joint, distinguishing it from standard femoral shaft fractures that would typically fall under F096.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing F093 in conjunction with F096 or F021 for the same femur is a common rejection trigger, as these codes are mutually exclusive for fractures below the intertrochanteric region.
- Failing to account for the 85% rule when performing multiple fracture reductions during the same operative session will lead to payment adjustments.
- Attempting to bill for routine post-operative care or the removal of temporary traction pins, which are already included in the F093 fee.
Billing Tips
- Always append the appropriate after-hours premium (E409 or E410) if the procedure occurs outside of standard daytime hours to increase the base fee by 50% or 75% respectively.
- If extensive debridement is required for a compound fracture, ensure E556 is billed alongside F093 to capture the 50% increase on the reduction fee.
