Surgical excision of the coccyx, also known as a coccygectomy. This service is listed in the Musculoskeletal System Surgical Procedures section of the Schedule under 'Pelvis and Hip' on page . The fee for the procedure includes the associated pre-operative and post-operative care as defined in the surgical preamble (see ). For a coccyx fracture where no reduction/excision is performed, a visit fee is applicable instead (see page for UVC).
When to Use
- Use F115 for the definitive surgical excision of the coccyx in patients with chronic, refractory coccydynia that has failed conservative management.
- Use F115 when performing a formal coccygectomy for post-traumatic sequelae where the coccyx is malunited or unstable and requires surgical removal.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill F115 for simple fracture management; if the patient presents with a coccyx fracture and no excision is performed, you must bill a standard visit fee (UVC) instead.
- F115 is a surgical procedure code and includes all routine pre-operative and post-operative care; billing additional office visits during the global period will result in rejections.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly details the excision of the coccyx to support the surgical nature of the claim, as F115 is strictly for the excision procedure.
- If the procedure is performed on an emergency basis or after hours, ensure you append the appropriate E-code (e.g., E409 or E410) to the F115 claim to capture the 50-75% procedural fee increase.
