F140
F140 – Removal of intermaxillary fixation device(s)
OHIP Anaesthesia Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Surgical procedure for the removal of intermaxillary fixation devices. For removal of these devices under general anaesthesia, refer to R652.
When to Use
- Use F140 for the routine removal of arch bars or intermaxillary fixation wires in a clinic setting under local anesthesia.
- Select F140 when the fixation device was previously placed under F138 or F139 and the patient has reached the required duration of immobilization.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing F140 on the same day as F138 or F139 will result in an automatic rejection due to the explicit restriction in the Schedule of Benefits.
- Attempting to bill F140 when the procedure is performed under general anesthesia is a common audit trigger; use R652 instead for hospital-based removals.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the clinical note clearly distinguishes the removal procedure from any subsequent follow-up assessment to avoid claims being flagged as inclusive of a minor surgical procedure.
