G209Skin testing - technical component

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Represents the technical component of a single skin test. This is claimed in conjunction with the professional component, G197. As per the Schedule (), the technical component of a diagnostic procedure is only eligible for payment where: 1. The physician has the necessary training and experience to personally render the technical component of the service. 2. The physician maintains documentation that describes the process by which the physician monitors quality assurance in accordance with professional standards. The physician submitting a claim for the technical component is responsible for the complete quality assurance process for all elements of the service, including data acquisition, reporting, and record keeping, and must be able to demonstrate this upon request by the MOH.

When to Use

  • Use G209 in conjunction with G197 when you personally oversee the technical application of a skin prick test in your office setting.
  • Claim G209 when you have established a formal quality assurance protocol for the maintenance and calibration of testing materials used for allergy skin testing.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G209 for tests performed on hospital in-patients, which is strictly prohibited under the GP11 payment rules.
  • Submitting G209 without the mandatory professional component G197, which will result in an automatic rejection for an incomplete service claim.
  • Failing to document the quality assurance process for the technical component, which creates a significant risk of clawback during a Ministry audit.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure your billing software is configured to link G209 and G197 on the same claim submission to satisfy the requirement for a complete diagnostic service.
