Endotracheal intubation for resuscitation (not to be claimed when followed by a surgical procedure at which time it is included in the anaesthetic procedure).
When to Use
- Use G211 for emergency endotracheal intubation performed during a resuscitation event in the Emergency Department or on the ward.
- Use G211 when securing an airway for a patient in acute respiratory failure where no subsequent surgical procedure is performed.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill G211 if the intubation is followed by a surgical procedure, as the fee is bundled into the anaesthetic global fee.
- Do not bill G211 in conjunction with Critical Care codes (e.g., G510, G511), as these are restricted code classes.
- Failure to record the exact start and stop times of the intubation procedure in the patient's record will result in a rejection or clawback during audit.
Billing Tips
- Always append the appropriate After Hours Procedure Premium (E409-E413) if the intubation occurs during the specified time windows to maximize the procedural fee.
- Ensure the procedure note clearly distinguishes the intubation as a resuscitation event rather than a routine elective airway management case.
