OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This service is for a percutaneous nerve block of a single intercostal nerve. For each additional intercostal nerve blocked, G221 should be claimed. As per the rules on , a nerve block is generally not eligible for payment when administered by the same physician who performs another diagnostic, therapeutic, or surgical procedure on the same patient during the same encounter.

When to Use

  • Use G220 for a primary percutaneous intercostal nerve block performed for chronic pain management or diagnostic purposes.
  • Use G220 in combination with G221 when performing blocks on multiple intercostal nerves during a single session.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G220 alongside a surgical procedure performed by the same physician will trigger an automatic rejection per GP101 rules.
  • Attempting to bill G220 for post-operative pain management will result in a rejection; G224 is the correct code for that specific indication.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the claim includes G220 for the first nerve and G221 for each subsequent nerve to accurately reflect the total number of blocks performed.
