G240Pudendal - bilateral

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This service covers the performance of a bilateral pudendal nerve block. A pudendal nerve block is a procedure where a local anesthetic is injected to block the pudendal nerves on both sides. This is typically done for pain management or anaesthesia for procedures in the perineal area. This code is for the bilateral service; for the unilateral version, see G229.

When to Use

  • Use G240 when performing a bilateral pudendal nerve block for perineal anesthesia during minor surgical procedures or for chronic pelvic pain management.
  • Select G240 specifically when both sides are blocked; do not use G229 twice to represent a bilateral procedure.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G240 in conjunction with P014 or P016 is prohibited, as these obstetrical anesthesia codes are intended for continuous conduction blocks.
  • Submitting G240 when only a unilateral block was performed will trigger an audit risk; use G229 for unilateral cases instead.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the clinical record explicitly states 'bilateral' to justify the use of G240 over the unilateral G229 code.
