G244 – Femoral nerve - bilateral
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is for a bilateral femoral nerve block, a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure involving the injection of an anesthetic or other substance around both femoral nerves. This code is for the bilateral procedure, distinct from its unilateral counterpart, G243.
When to Use
- Use G244 when performing a bilateral femoral nerve block for acute pain management or diagnostic purposes in a single encounter.
- Select G244 instead of billing G243 twice, as the Schedule of Benefits explicitly defines G244 for the bilateral procedure.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G243 twice for a bilateral procedure will trigger a rejection or audit flag; always use G244 for bilateral services.
- Attempting to bill an assessment code (e.g., A007) in addition to G244 during the same encounter is often disallowed unless the assessment is for an unrelated condition and clearly documented as such.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative note explicitly states that the procedure was performed bilaterally to justify the use of G244 over the unilateral G243.

All insured services must be documented in appropriate records to establish that: 1. an insured service was provided; 2. the service for which the account is submitted is the service that was rendered; and 3. the service was medically necessary.
