G282Umbilical vein catheterization

OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

A diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for the catheterization of the umbilical vein. The service includes the work of obtaining any necessary blood sample. This procedure is eligible for after-hours procedure premiums (E409, E410, E412, E413) as outlined on of the Schedule.

When to Use

  • Use G282 for the initial placement of an umbilical venous catheter in a newborn for emergency access or exchange transfusion.
  • Use G282 when obtaining blood samples via the umbilical vein catheter as part of the procedural work, as this is included in the fee.

Common Pitfalls

  • Do not bill G282 in addition to G309 if both procedures are performed during the same encounter, as the Ministry may view this as unbundling.
  • Avoid billing G282 for routine maintenance or flushing of an existing catheter, as the code specifically covers the catheterization procedure itself.
  • Ensure the patient is within the 28-day age limit; claims for infants older than 28 days will be automatically rejected.

Billing Tips

  • Always append the appropriate after-hours premium (E409, E410, E412, or E413) if the procedure is non-elective and performed outside standard hours to maximize the procedural fee.
  • If you are an Emergency Department physician, ensure you use the 'H' prefix on your claim to remain eligible for the E412 or E413 premiums.
