G288 – Endomyocardial biopsy - transvascular
OHIP Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Performs a transvascular endomyocardial biopsy from either the right or left side of the heart. As per the Schedule of Benefits, this service includes all common elements of insured services as outlined in the General Preamble (, ).
When to Use
- Use G288 for the routine surveillance of cardiac transplant patients to assess for acute cellular or antibody-mediated rejection.
- Use G288 when performing a diagnostic biopsy to investigate unexplained cardiomyopathy or suspected myocarditis in a non-transplant patient.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G288 in conjunction with a consultation or assessment code on the same day is generally disallowed unless the assessment is for a separate, unrelated condition.
- Failing to recognize that G288 is a procedural fee that includes the technical and professional components of the biopsy, meaning it cannot be unbundled into separate imaging or guidance codes.
Billing Tips
- Ensure that if the procedure is performed on an urgent, non-elective basis after hours, you append the appropriate premium (E409 or E410) to maximize the procedural fee.
