This service represents the professional component for the interrogation and analysis of a non-programmable automatic implantable defibrillator. The service includes the performance and interpretation of an electrocardiogram (ECG) as part of the analysis.

When to Use

  • Use G317 for the professional component of a routine interrogation of a non-programmable automatic implantable defibrillator when an ECG is performed and interpreted as part of the analysis.
  • Select G317 when the device is non-programmable, as opposed to G321 which is strictly reserved for the interrogation and analysis of programmable devices.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing G317 in conjunction with E409 or E410 will result in a rejection, as this procedure is not classified as a major invasive procedure eligible for after-hours premiums.
  • Submitting G317 for a programmable device is a common audit trigger; ensure the device type matches the code definition to avoid recovery of funds.

Billing Tips

  • If the patient requires an urgent, non-elective assessment outside of standard office hours, claim the appropriate Special Visit Premium (Table I-VI) in addition to G317 to capture the location and time-based uplift.
