Clinical Programming of Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS) - includes one or more visits for DBS checking, minor and major DBS adjustments, and intensive programming. This service is for the first implantation site.
When to Use
- Use G547 for the initial or routine programming session of a primary deep brain stimulator lead site to manage symptoms of Parkinson's, essential tremor, or dystonia.
- Apply this code when performing complex, multi-step parameter adjustments that require intensive clinical assessment and device interrogation.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill G547 in conjunction with a standard office visit code (A007 or A001) on the same day, as the G547 fee is designed to encompass the clinical assessment and the programming procedure.
- Avoid billing G547 more than once per patient per day; if programming is required for a second lead site, use G549 instead of repeating G547.
Billing Tips
- Always append G549 when programming a second implantation site during the same encounter to capture the additional complexity and time involved.
