This service represents the technical component of a full field or multi-focal electro-retinography with report. It includes the use of equipment and personnel to conduct the test. This service includes any pupil dilation and refraction necessary to complete the study. The professional component for interpretation is billed separately using G439 for full field electro-retinography or G524 for multi-focal electro-retinography.
When to Use
- Use G852 when performing the technical data acquisition for full-field ERG to investigate retinal dystrophies or unexplained vision loss.
- Use G852 when conducting multi-focal ERG technical testing to map localized retinal function in patients with suspected maculopathy.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing G852 without an accompanying professional interpretation code (G439 or G524) often triggers audit scrutiny regarding the necessity of the technical component.
- Submitting G852 for routine screening in asymptomatic patients is a common rejection reason, as the MOH requires documented underlying pathology or suspicion thereof.
