When to Use
- Use J060 when injecting contrast through an existing nephrostomy tube to evaluate the patency of the upper urinary tract or the integrity of the catheter.
- Use J060 for diagnostic imaging of the renal pelvis and ureter when a nephrostomy tube is already in situ, distinguishing it from J045 or J046 which involve the initial insertion or replacement of the tube.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing J060 alongside a procedure for nephrostomy tube exchange or insertion (e.g., J045) is often rejected as the imaging is considered an inherent part of the primary procedure.
- Attempting to bill J060 as a consultation or assessment code; it is a procedural code and must be billed as such, typically with the appropriate diagnostic imaging facility fee if applicable.
Billing Tips
- Ensure you apply the correct age-based premium (e.g., AGE_PREMIUM_UNDER_30D) if the patient qualifies, as these are not automatically calculated by the system.
- If the procedure is performed on an urgent, non-elective basis in a hospital setting, ensure you append the appropriate Special Visit Premium (Table I, II, or III) to capture the travel and urgent service components.
