A diagnostic ultrasound of the scrotal contents. This service is comprised of a technical component (H fee) for performing the scan and a professional component (P fee) for the interpretation and report. See the Diagnostic Ultrasound and General Preamble sections for full billing rules, including referral requirements and restrictions on billing the technical component.
When to Use
- Use J183 for the diagnostic evaluation of acute scrotal pain to rule out torsion or epididymitis when clinical examination is inconclusive.
- Use J183 for the assessment of palpable scrotal masses or suspected varicoceles to differentiate between intratesticular and extratesticular pathology.
- Use J183 for follow-up monitoring of known scrotal abnormalities where a formal ultrasound report is required for ongoing management.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing J183 without a valid written referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is a direct violation of the General Preamble and will result in recovery.
- Attempting to bill J183 for a screening ultrasound in an asymptomatic patient is not a valid diagnostic indication and constitutes an audit risk.
- Failing to distinguish between the technical and professional components when billing in a hospital setting can lead to duplicate claims or payment rejection.
