This service is comprised of a technical component (H) and a professional component (P). The technical component involves the administration of the test and data acquisition, while the professional component involves the interpretation of the results. As per the rules for diagnostic services on , the technical component is claimed with suffix B and the professional component with suffix C.
When to Use
- Use J333 when performing a methacholine or histamine challenge to confirm a diagnosis of asthma in patients with suggestive symptoms but normal baseline spirometry (J322).
- Use J333 for patients requiring objective evidence of airway hyperresponsiveness when clinical history is equivocal and standard pulmonary function tests (J335) are non-diagnostic.
Common Pitfalls
- Submitting J333 without the mandatory B suffix for the technical component or C suffix for the professional component will result in an automatic rejection.
- Billing J333 on the same day as a standard spirometry (J322) without clear medical necessity for both may trigger a manual audit for duplicate or overlapping services.
- Failing to ensure the referring physician's billing number is included on the claim will lead to a rejection, as this is a diagnostic service requiring a formal referral.
