K102Detention for the Transport of Donor Organs

OHIP Consultation & Visit Premium Codes Code — GENERAL PREAMBLE · Schedule of Benefits

Detention for the Transport of Donor Organs is payable for time travelling to and from a donor centre (excluding time spent in the donor centre) for the purpose of collecting and transporting to the recipient hospital (a) donor organ(s), including fresh bone being harvested. This service is billed per quarter hour or part thereof.

When to Use

  • Use K102 when you are actively transporting a harvested organ from a donor centre to the recipient hospital, excluding any time spent inside the donor centre.
  • Apply this code for the transport of fresh bone harvested for transplant purposes when the travel is required for the delivery to the recipient site.

Common Pitfalls

  • Do not bill K102 for time spent inside the donor centre, as the code specifically covers travel time only; including facility time will lead to rejection upon IC review.
  • Failure to submit a detailed written explanation with the claim will result in automatic rejection, as K102 is subject to individual consideration (IC) by a medical consultant.
  • Billing K102 concurrently with K001 is prohibited; ensure your claim does not include both codes for the same time period.

Billing Tips

  • Explicitly document the exact start and end times of the transport in the patient's chart to support the number of quarter-hour units claimed during the IC review process.
  • Always append the appropriate after-hours premium (E409, E410, E412, or E413) if the transport commences during the specified evening or night windows to maximize the procedural fee.
