The technical component for the collection of a blood specimen by venipuncture, typically performed at a licensed laboratory or specimen collection centre.
When to Use
- Use L001 exclusively when operating a private laboratory licensed under the Laboratory and Specimen Collection Centre Licensing Act.
- Use this code for the technical component of blood collection when the service is performed in a facility distinct from a physician's office.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L001 for venipuncture performed within a physician's private office, which must instead be billed using G489.
- Attempting to claim L001 for blood collection related to weight loss programs or fertility services, as these are explicitly excluded from OHIP coverage.
- Submitting L001 for professional interpretation services, which are restricted to the L800-L869 series.
