When to Use
- Use L008 for the collection of a cervical or vaginal smear for cytology when the primary purpose of the visit is the screening or diagnostic investigation of the patient.
- Apply this code when performing a Papanicolaou smear in a clinical setting, distinct from a general physical examination or periodic health visit.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L008 in addition to an office visit code (A007) if the smear is performed as part of a comprehensive periodic health examination, as the fee is considered inclusive.
- Avoid billing L008 if the laboratory specimen collection is performed by nursing staff without a physician-patient encounter that meets the requirements for a visit fee.
Billing Tips
- You may claim L008 in conjunction with a minor assessment (A001) if the patient presents with a specific complaint requiring an assessment in addition to the smear collection.
