When to Use
- Use L009 for the collection of a cervical or vaginal smear for cytology when performed as a standalone procedure.
- Bill this code when performing a Pap test during a visit where the primary purpose is not a comprehensive periodic health examination, as it is not included in the K030/K031 fee.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L009 in addition to a general assessment (A007) if the Pap test is performed as part of a routine physical, as the fee is considered inclusive of the assessment.
- Avoid billing L009 alongside a minor procedure code if the specimen collection is incidental to the primary procedure performed during the same encounter.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the laboratory requisition is clearly linked to the date of service to support the claim if audited for the performance of the collection.
