When to Use
- Use L015 for the collection of a cervical/vaginal smear for cytology when performed as a standalone service or in conjunction with a visit.
- Bill L015 when performing a Pap test screening on an asymptomatic patient during a periodic health examination.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L015 if the Pap smear is performed as part of a procedure where the fee already includes the collection, such as a colposcopy (Z750).
- Avoid billing L015 in addition to a minor assessment (A007) if the visit was solely for the purpose of the Pap test, as the assessment fee is intended to cover the encounter.
Billing Tips
- L015 is a laboratory collection fee; ensure it is billed with the appropriate diagnostic code reflecting the reason for the smear, such as screening or follow-up.
