L031Glucose, semi-quantitative (e.g. reagent strip)

OHIP Dermatology Code · Schedule of Benefits

Glucose, semi-quantitative (e.g. reagent strip). This laboratory service involves the estimation of glucose levels in a specimen (typically urine or blood) using a reagent strip method.

When to Use

  • Use L031 when performing a technical reagent strip glucose test in a laboratory setting where you are billing only for the technical component.
  • Use L031 for point-of-care urine or blood glucose screening when the service is provided as a laboratory technical component rather than an office-based physician procedure.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing L031 in conjunction with G002 for the same specimen on the same day will result in a rejection due to the restriction on concurrent quantitative or semi-quantitative glucose testing.
  • Failing to provide a written interpretative report for the procedure is a common audit risk, as L031 requires documentation of the interpretation, not just the raw result.

Billing Tips

  • Choose G002 instead of L031 if you are a physician performing the test in your own office, as G002 carries a higher fee ($2.26) and is designed for office-based procedures.
  • Ensure that if multiple specimens are tested on the same occasion, you bill L031 for each individual specimen to accurately reflect the volume of technical services provided.
