When to Use
- Use L041 for the collection of a cervical or vaginal smear for cytology when performed as a standalone procedure.
- Bill L041 when obtaining a Pap test during a visit where the primary purpose is not a comprehensive periodic health examination, as the latter would be covered under the global fee for Q012 or Q013.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L041 in addition to a minor assessment code like A007 is often rejected unless the Pap test is the primary reason for the encounter and documented as such.
- Do not bill L041 if the specimen collection is performed during a visit where a more comprehensive procedure code or a specific examination fee already includes the collection service.
Billing Tips
- Ensure that the laboratory requisition is clearly linked to the date of service to support the claim if audited for the performance of the collection.
