When to Use
- Use L043 for the collection of a cervical or vaginal smear for cytology when performed as a standalone procedure.
- Bill L043 when a Pap test is performed during a visit where the primary purpose is not a periodic health examination, as it cannot be claimed with A007 or A008.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L043 in addition to a comprehensive assessment or periodic health exam (A007/A008) as the laboratory specimen collection is considered included in the global fee.
- Avoid billing L043 if the specimen is collected during a procedure where a tray fee or other procedural code already covers the cost of specimen handling.
Billing Tips
- If you perform a medically necessary visit in addition to the Pap smear, bill the appropriate office visit code (e.g., A001) and use the diagnostic code for the reason for the visit, not just the screening code.
